4 Tips for buying Woodworking Machinery

Are you looking for a classic woodworking machine? Buying a new machine for your workshop can be a big deal so, here are a few helpful tips to guide you.

Advanced Machinery Services is primarily a service company so, we have seen, touched and repaired a lot of machines and we know of first-hand the main problems that you can get if you do not buy a good machine.

Here are our 4 tips to help you in the process:

1. Buy a machine that performs consistently:

Machine performance is critical whether you are a “one-man band” or a multi-national company. Durability, performance and reliability are at the top of our priorities. One of our suggestions is that you insist on seeing the machine in action in a showroom environment working with your materials. Any reputable dealer should be able to do this for you.

AMS exclusively sells the Wadkin Bursgreen range of woodworking machinery and Tooling because we know from experience how reliable the machinery is. The Wadkin Bursgreen range of machines are designed to perform at the highest level consistently over many years.

2. Look for good value not the lowest price:

Price should be quite low on your list of priorities. A cheap machine can give you service sometimes but not constantly and with stability. There is a saying that “it is not what you buy its who you buy it from”. It is important to buy a machine from a reputable dealer with decades of experience in producing and maintaining quality machinery like AMS, with many of their employees having decades of service with WADKIN.

At AMS, we don’t offer a machine in our Wadkin Bursgreen Range if we are not 100% sure it is going to be reliable.

3. Invest with a company that can “Future proof” your production requirements:

Most woodworking workshops evolve over a period of time and you should be working with a company that can,

  • Supply the correct machinery first time.
  • Book and make a safe delivery to your workshop
  • Install and commission the machinery with their own staff (not sub-contractors)
  • Show you how to use the machine
  • Service the machinery an annual basis with their own staff.
  • Be with you for many years to come as partners.

 4. Consider spare parts:

You should be looking for a partner with an expert spare parts team. You can buy a machine but if it is not easy to get the replacements, it could be a nightmare when the moment arrives.

AMS has one of the largest spare parts stocks in the UK and has decades of experience in sourcing and supplying woodwork machinery spare parts for all the main manufacturing brands (Weinig, SCM, Felder etc.) from our factory here in Leicestershire.

There is always the chance that when dealing with very old machines that the manufacturer may not exist anymore, but talk to our spares desk and they will give you the best of advice.

Do your homework on the supplier:

  • Does the supplier have a fully functioning showroom allowing for dedicated demonstrations on your own materials?
  • Are the staff experienced and knowledgeable?
  • Does the supplier have their own fully employed service engineers sited around the UK?
  • Does the supplier offer other services that you will need as a training, tooling or spare parts?

At AMS our staff are all fully city and guilds qualified woodworking machinists with decades of experience with Wadkin. We work in partnership with our customers now offering:

  • Planned service and breakdown response options.
  • New Wadkin Bursgreen machinery
  • Selected machinery rebuilt by our skilled inhouse engineering team.
